The A2 inburgering exam: the parts and how to practise

Last checked: 28 October 2026. This is an unofficial guide. DUO can change its process at any time; the official information is on inburgeren.nl.

The A2 inburgering exam is not one exam but several separate exams. You book and pass each one on its own. Mijn Inburgering shows which ones you have to take.

The parts

  • Reading (Lezen): on a computer. You read texts and answer questions. 65 minutes.
  • Listening (Luisteren): on a computer. You answer questions about short films, and you listen to texts. 45 minutes.
  • Writing (Schrijven): with pen and paper. You get 4 tasks, such as writing a short letter or filling in a form. 40 minutes.
  • Speaking (Spreken): on a computer. You watch short films and answer questions by speaking Dutch. 35 minutes.
  • KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij): knowledge of Dutch society, on a computer. The questions are grouped in themes, such as living, and work and income. 45 minutes.

Some people integrating under the older 2013 law also take ONA (orientation on the Dutch labour market). Under the 2021 law you don't. Mijn Inburgering shows which law applies to you.

The details above are from DUO's pages on the language exams and the knowledge exams; check there before your exam.

Free official practice exams

DUO has free official practice exams for every A2 part and for KNM on its practice page: 3 for Writing, 3 for Speaking, 3 for Listening, 4 for Reading and 2 for KNM. They look like the real exam, so do them at least once before your exam.

  • Use a computer if you can. On a phone or tablet, turn it sideways.
  • The Speaking practice exams don't work in Safari: use another browser.
  • Don't learn the answers by heart: the real exam has different questions.

Practise here, for free

Train for Inburgering gives you lessons and exercises for Reading, Listening, Writing and KNM at A2 level, and timed practice exams with a score at the end. The explanations are in English, Dutch or Spanish; the exercises are in Dutch, like the real exam. Speaking is not in the app yet: use DUO's practice exams for that.

Tips

  • Practise with a timer, so the real exam does not feel rushed.
  • For Writing, practise on paper: short letters to a neighbour, a school or a landlord, and filling in forms.
  • For KNM, learn how things work in daily life: the doctor, the municipality (gemeente), renting a home, school and work.
  • Book your exam early: it can take more than 6 weeks before you can take it. See how to book your exam.
